Hazard communication

The purpose is to set up a hazard communiction system built on Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and a new labellling system based on classification criteria defined in the Global Harmonized System.

Material Safety Data Sheet

A MSDS shall be prepared for every substance or preparations which meet harmonized citeria of GHS regarding physical, health and environment hazards.

The MSDS contains 16 chapters:

1. Identification
2. Hazard(s) identification
3. Composition/information on ingredients
4. First-aid measures
5. Fire-fighting measures
6. Accidental release measures
7. Handling and storage
8. Exposure controls/personal protection
9. Physical and chemical properties
10. Stability and reactivity
11. Toxicological information
12. Ecological information
13. Disposal considerations
14. Transport information
15. Regulatory information
16. Other information.

It is based on the layout required by REACH recgulation. However the GHS introduces 2 new features:

  • Chgapter 2: GHS symbols will substitute the current symbols.

  • Chapter 16: The paragraph "Abbreviations and acronyms" explains every acronym written in the MSDS.

Labelling

GHS pictograms have the shape of a diamond. Symbols are black on with a white background and bordered by a red line. A new label in GHS system shall contain the following informations:
  • Product identification

  • Supplier identification

  • Symbols

  • One signal word: "Warning" or"Danger" to indicate the severity of the danger.

  • Hazard statements

  • Precautionary statements and pictograms
