GHS implementation in Europe: CLP

The GHS introduces new rules regarding:

  • the classification of substances and mixtures
  • the labelling depending on the hazard class and category
  • the content of the Safety Data Sheet

The GHS is a global system but may be implemented as building blocks.

The application of the GHS in Europe: the CLP

The CLP is the implementation of the GHs in the European Union.

Some GHS building blocks have not been implemented in the EU.

  • Rules related to the Safety Data Sheets defined in REACH article 31
  • Some GHS hazard categories: 87 in the GHS UN, 80 in the CLP.

The CLP also introduces european specific features:

  • 1 additional class: Hazardous to the ozone layer.
  • additional hazard phrases: EUHXXX. Ex: EUH018 "In use may form flammable/explosive vapour-air mixture."

All the phrases have been tranlsaed in the european languages.

Implementation schedule GHS/CLP/REACH

December,1st 2010: Before this deadline the suppliers of substances and mixtures are able to choose the GHS/CLP or to keep on using the former system.  From this day, substances manufactured at more than 1000 t/yr, CMR 1 and 2 at more  than 1 t/yr and and R50/53 at more than 100 t/yr have to be registered.

Ultimate Deadlines

June, 1st 2015: From this date, SGH/CLP is mandatory for substances and mixtures.

June 1st 2018: Substances manufactured or imported at more than 1 t/yr have to be registered.
